As part of its work promoting cultural understanding, the ESU runs two international scholarship programmes in the Fine Arts. Interested applicants should contact Gillian Parker, Head of Cultural Programmes.

ESU American Arts Scholarship to Attingham

Since 2001 the ESU has supported an American scholar at the Attingham Summer School, a three week residential course examining the applied arts and the history of the English country house. The school takes its name from Attingham Park, where the courses formerly took place. Interested applicants for the Scholarship, who should be American citizens and professionally or academically involved in the study of the fine, decorative and applied arts, should contact Gillian Parker or the Attingham Summer School for further information on the application process. The scholarship is assisted by proceeds from the Attingham Lecture Series – see the Forthcoming Events section for more details.

The ESU Chilton Art History Scholarship

The ESU Chilton Art History Scholarship sponsors a student on a Christie's Education Course. The award is designed to help fund part of the fees for either the one year Christie’s Course or for the M Litt Programme (awarded by the University of Glasgow). Options for both courses are either "Early European Art: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance", "Fine and Decorative Arts: Renaissance to 1960" or "Modern and Contemporary Art: 1860 to present day". A further option for the M Litt Programme only is "The Arts of China: 1700BC - 1800AD". The first award was made for the academic year 1994-95 and it is hoped that the Scholarship will continue to be awarded annually.
The successful candidate will be chosen by the normal selection procedure at Christie's Education, in conjunction with representatives from the ESU. Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English and must be prepared to attend interviews, at their own expense, in either London or New York.
As an educational charity, the ESU's purpose is to promote international friendship and understanding through the use of the English language. A range of scholarships for students, post-graduates, teachers and musicians is already offered; the Art History Scholarship is the ESU's first award in the field of fine arts.
Further information on both the courses and the Scholarship can be obtained from Christie's Education, 153 Great Titchfield Street, London W1W 5BD, Telephone: 020 7665 4350 Fax: 020 7665 4351 e-mail: education@christies.com

About Goodenough College
Aims

The College was founded in 1930 as a residential college for students from The Dominions. Its aim was to improve international tolerance and understanding amongst people on the brink of their careers by providing a forum in which they could interact. The College has expanded greatly since that time and now consists of a community of 650 postgraduate students from over ninety countries.
The mission of the College today is as follows:
Goodenough College aims to be the residence of first choice in London for outstanding postgraduate students from the Commonwealth and the rest of the world by offering a unique experience through stimulating intellectual debate, fostering cross-cultural activity and providing an exceptional social environment.
The College has excellent residential and study facilities. It also runs an extensive extra-curricular programme, which includes a conference series aimed at examining subjects of international concern. Its membership includes Visiting Fellows, who act as advisors to these conferences, and Goodenough Alumni, who have a more informal role as mentors and advisors to Members.
The College serves all the academic and professional institutions in London, where its Members study and teach. It maintains a loose balance between nations, as it does between the broad faculties of Medicine, Law, Business, Art, Science and Education. It is the first choice for scholars from a wide range of international schemes including Chevening, Fulbright, Commonwealth, Marshall and Beit.
Selection is based not only on the academic prowess of applicants but also on their ability and enthusiasm to contribute to the life of this unique College and, later, to their home countries. The College expects all those it selects to have the potential to rise to the heights of their chosen careers and, as a result, boasts an international alumnus of considerable achievement and influence.
Receiving the scholarship from the ESU does not automatically secure a place at Goodenough College, and scholarship recipients must go through the application and selection process set by the College for accommodation.
