Internships

Capitol Hill Programme

“It’s a different system to Westminster…..almost like a democratic political religion, which you only get a sense of by spending time there. It’s something you can’t pick up from the books. It’s the Hill experience.”

Internships are prized possessions in Washington. The ESU is able to offer official visa sponsorship and placements for up to ten interns to work in this highly competitive world. In recent years, ESU interns have worked in the offices of, amongst others, Edward Kennedy and Joe Biden. The social side of the programme can also afford an opportunity to develop relationships with British organisations, especially in the media, based in Washington DC.

Applications for summer 2010 internships are now open.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Friday 27 November. Shortlisted candidates must be available for interview at Dartmouth House between 9am and 5pm on Friday 11 December. Telephone interviews will not be offered an no other interview dates can be arranged.

Candidates should send an appropriately tailored CV along with a 250-word covering letter explaining their suitability for the programme. Places will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence; a demonstrated active interest in politics; a demonstrated ambition in one of the fields of politics, law, journalism, the civil service, or a politically related aspect of any other career in public life; and ambassadorial qualities. Candidates should show how the internship will help to achieve their goals. Applications should be sent by email to Jason Vit.

The Assemblée Nationale

"…a valuable experience for living in France, a fascinating insight into French politics, an exciting role in the ever shifting landscape of issues in one of Europe’s most important countries…"

The internship programme is run in association with ESU France, who provide interns with placements, as well support for finding accommodation. Previous interns have worked in the offices of Assemblée members such as M. Pierre Lellouche and M. Jacques Godfrian, and in the central office of the ruling party.
