Secondary Schools Exchange (SSE)

The ESU Secondary Schools Exchange scholarships were created in 1928 to promote Anglo-American understanding for the future. Each year 25-30 students in the UK from all backgrounds are offered the opportunity to spend two or three terms at a private school in the USA or Canada. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, board and lodging. All other costs must be covered by the scholar.

"When I left Britain the full implications of my time spent abroad did not occur to me. What I gained at Culver was far different from anything I had imagined and highly educational. This year has been a turning point in every part of my life."

Students must have taken A-levels or the equivalent and be intending to study at a UK university on their return. They should be under 19 years 6 months old when they take up the scholarship. Although students are placed in a private school in the US, successful applicants come from both the private and maintained sectors in the UK.

Scholars are placed in independent day and boarding schools across the US for example Packer Collegiate Institute, New York and Lawrenceville School, New Jersey.
